Below are reviews of fun little finds purchased locally. The typical cost per bottle is $10 or less, and the label probably has a little more pizazz than your traditional Barolo. But don't judge the bottle by the label. These reviews are personal and certainly non-professional evaluations of wines we've tried. Enjoy!

This is a very nice Malbec. Light and airy. There is blackberry in the color, nose, and palate. Tons of wood involved here as well. The oak really comes through. And there is a hint of cinnamon here too which I feel really enhances this wine. After all, 75% of taste is smell. I don't really notice it in the palate, but it's clear as day in the nose. Unfortunately, I can't give this bottle a 4 STAR because there is that annoying little metallic tinge afterward. It's kind of a cool, alkaline flavor similar to licking a flag pole in late autumn. I've noticed it in a few wines from Argentina lately. I have no idea where it comes from. Maybe from the storage casks after the oak aging. I just don't know.
perhaps the metallic taste is a fact that you are buying a "value" wine at Trader's....try trading up

A nice, solid wine. The nose tipped me off to the concoction's sweetness. A little thin and whispy for a Shiraz, but I rather like such a wine these days. The flavor was indeed sweet, but this sensation was almost immediately followed by bitterness. In fact, I had no sooner confirmed the sweet taste on the tip of the tongue when the tannins hit the back of my tongue. Nothing to be upset about. The tannins are gone in a flash. This is followed by nothing. Oddly enough, there is a distinct lack of flavor in the aftertaste...
All-in-all a good vino. Just not great. It did compliment my flank steak quite well this evening, but I just can't quite allow myself to award a fourth star. I'll just have to stick with my gut instinct here.
I'm curious to know more about the compliment that this wine paid to your flank steak. What did it say?
The flank steak was marinated in a homemade kalbi sauce for a couple of days, so the resulting product was slightly sweet with a hint of sesame. Cooked to perfection with a hint of red center, the meat was matched perfectly to this vino selection. We all know red wines are to be consumed with red meat, but this pairing was quite remarkable.
Literally, I believe I heard, "hey meat, fancy meeting you hear."

I'm just happy this wine isn't as damn sweet as the last several. On this basis alone I give it a 3 STAR rating. It's not great. In fact, it's a bit bitter, but I crave a bit of bitter right now.
The nose: A cherry and blackberry and other darkness. It's decent. I'm happy. May I continue to be so. I might just finish this bottle this evening. We'll see.
While this wine is a bit bitter, it has a fair to good aftertaste. Nothing leaving an overly sour taste on the tongue. No overwhelming tannins. Let's rejoice.
In general, I praise this purple stuff with a plaque of non-crappiness. Try a bottle. I think it's worthy... even as a ten dollar venture.

For $3 you really can't go wrong. This wine is average. Maybe a tad sweet in the tooth and a bit leggy, but for three bucks what do you expect? Still, I'm giving this beverage a 3 STAR rating. I've had much worse bottles at ten times the cost.
This stuff can be picked up at Trader Joe's for nearly free, and it's a good bottle to have around for non-discerning guests. Serve it. People won't puke. Most of them won't even be offended.
Another sweet beverage. There is however a little more substance to this vino. There's more Earth and tannins. A bit too much for my taste and too much of a contrast to the sweetness I'm experiencing. These are both immature wines that could use some more time in the bottle. The sugars have yet to break down properly.
I picked these two bottles up due to their price and label. Nifty label. Good price. I figured this would be a good opportunity to sample a Tempranillo and Garnacha from the same vineyard simultaneously and compare the two side by side.
The result is... I believe I prefer the Tempranillo to the Garnacha. But the Tempranillo wins by only the slightest of margins. It's ever so slightly sweeter and has less of a bitter aftertaste. However, I'm pretty certain the Garnacha would be the preferred beverage with food.
I know I'm only giving these fellas a 3 STAR rating, but I would not hesitate to purchase either again. They're both decent wines and probably crowd pleasers on any given day...
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
This is a sweet Tempranillo for sure. Sweet from beginning to end. Probably could've used a bit more time in the casks. Not a bad vino, just a bit of not-quite-ready. I'm not saying it's grape juice or anything. I just think the vintage is a bit immature...
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
Fairly smooth for a Cabernet. Just a little edgy in the aftertaste. You definitely taste the earth in this beverage. Perhaps a little too much so... The other predominant flavor is blackberry. But you only notice it for a moment. Then the earth takes over.
Not one of my favorites.

A nice change from the other vino I've had this evening... even though I'm going to give it the exact same rating (3 STARS). I just happen to like Tempranillo more at the moment, but I can't let that sway my judgment.
Clearly dog is the motif for this evening as both reviewed beverages have canines on their labels. That wasn't on purpose. That's just how things turned out.
Oddly enough, I find this Tempranillo to be sweeter than the Merlot I consumed just an hour ago. It's a good sweet. Right now, I prefer it.
There are some earth and oak tones here as well. There were clearly oak casks involved in the aging of this beverage. While there usually are, there's no doubt here. Licking the actual casks would be the only way to create a stronger oak palate. Watch out for splinters.
A small amount of bitter and a slightly pungent nose. Not a terrible pungent. Just a hint of not-quite-right.
All-in-all this is an average vino.
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
A nice Merlot. Good nose and such. There's just a bit too much anise in the palate for my taste. And the color is extraordinarily dark and almost opaque. Other than that, it's fine. I don't think you'd upset anyone by severing this wine at your next gathering. It does have a good blackberry flavor. Anise is just overwhelming in my opinion.
The label is rather sheik, and certainly their cause is worthy. It's my understanding that 50 cents of each Doghouse purchase goes to help the Guide Dogs for the Blind organization.

Plum. Tons of plum.
While the blend is not listed, if I were to guess, I'd say Shiraz was the predominant varietal. It has the same sweet characteristics and color. The nose, however, is of plum. Smooth. No bitter tannins. And a slight fruity aftertaste.
A decent wine from South Africa. I'm tempted to give it 4 STARS, but I just can't.
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
Not a bad Cabernet. Dark purple in color which is consistant for a cab. It has that standard Cabernet bite. Just a tinge of bitter and tannins. Then there is a slight sweetness to the palate. This is unexpected for a Cabernet, yet I feel it balances the beverage quite nicely. The aftertaste has a slight flavor of metal. If I had to pick a metal, I'd choose tin to describe it. While there IS an earthy tone to the wine, I feel the metalic portion slightly overwhelms. Therefore, only 3 STARS.
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
This is a decent Merlot. There's your standard hint of currant, and the fluid is a tad on the thick side. Pretty good though. Goes down smooth. Didn't cost much. And it has a groovy label. What more do you need?
I have nothing glowing or disparaging to say about this beverage. I guess if I was more into Merlots at the moment, I might have given the bottle a 3.5 STAR rating.

This one is a surprise. At first whiff I was sure I was to be disappointed. Nope. This is a good wine. The nose betrayed it's actual character by releasing a scent of sweet, sweet licorice. Not being a licorice fan, I'm usually immediately turned off by such wines. But this one wasn't so bad. In fact, I rather enjoyed it. It was a tad sweet and a bit leggy. And there IS a hint of anise in the palate. However, it wasn't overpowering, and the hint of pepper helped dull down the sweet. Overall it was a good balance. If you enjoy licorice, then this is the bottle for you. I see no reason not to purchase this wine. It's a good bottle to "throw in the mix" every now and then...
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
This is what I would refer to as a "medium" wine. Every aspect of it seems to fall somewhere in the middle of any given range. It's neither smooth nor does it have great bite. There isn't a significant acidic bitterness involved, but it's certainly not sweet. The legs are neither strong nor weak. In general, this wine would be a great crowd pleaser at a party where no one really knew anything about wine. Nothing wrong with that. And, really, that's probably a pretty good audience to gather if your a small wine maker from Argentina. Nothing wrong with that at all. I don't think I'd buy it again, mostly just because I like a little bit more of an argument in my beverages. There isn't one here. You open the bottle. It says, "hello." You drink it. It says, "good bye." No real story. No passion...
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
This vintage is quite good for a mere seven bucks. It's a little bitter but has a rather pleasing dark cherry flavor. The legs are a little thin, but this is a quality I actually prefer in a shiraz. It's the syrup-legs of the thicker vinos I disapprove of.
Goes well with pizza!
Buy it. Try it. Tell the World what you think...
3 OUF OT 5 STARS
There is a bit-o-bitter in this beverage. The legs are a little thinner than average for a Merlot I'd say... which isn't a bad thing. At times, leggier wines repulse me. I don't enjoy having to chew my liquids.
This is a good light-bodied wine. I just think it's a little high in tannins. The after-palate is a wee bit strong in the same way a first Sourpatch Kid out of the bag is at the movies. Halfway through the bag though, things are going down just fine and you're mostly just dreaming about your next opportunity to brush your teeth.
What really impressed me about the bottle was the label. I love it. I really do. There's print and foil relief composed of just a handful of coordinating colors. Thumbs up for style. Now, if you could just transform fashion into flavor... Then Tin Roof would really be onto something.
Don't get me wrong. This is a decent wine. I wouldn't hesitate to serve it at a gathering. I just wouldn't go out of my way to purchase it for moi (aka myself). For eight to nine bucks there are better options out there. THIS IS the sole reason I started this blog: To lead YOU to the excellent, great, awesome values. Of course, you must agree with my assessment of vinos! But who doesn't?
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
A very mellow Pinot. And, by mellow I mean lack of flavor. The 3 STAR rating is due to my belief there are folks in the wild which enjoy such a vino. Some folks enjoy drinking wine without having to deal with flavor. This is usually a symptom of being new to wine. Don't get me wrong. There's nothing bad about this. In fact, it's a general necessity. Introductory wines should be aplenty. Without such, fewer are likely to delve into the world of wine, and no one wants that... That would defeat our purpose here.
This is a very unoffensive selection. I know just the type to migrate to it at a party. This is a very good red for those wishing to make the transition from white. It's most certainly ideal for the casual Sauvignon Blanc consumer.
The nose is of blackberry and cherry and the color is a very pleasing ruby red. For me, I wish there was just a hint more palate. Then we'd be in business.

Honestly, this wine did not strike me as very good. However, I can see how it might appeal a little bit more to the masses. Therefore, the 3 OUT OF 5 STARS.
The stuff just isn't that tasty. There is a hint of cherry, but there is also an overwhelming taste of blandness. Question: Can blandness be considered a taste?
I taste cherry dirt. Is that descriptive enough? There's a lack of flavor with a hint of dirt, cherry, and anise...
But, really, this is probably an average wine. Not terrible. Nothing I'd personally drink again. But also a wine I believe very unlikely to offend.
Try it if you like...

A Decent Tempranillo. Deep rosey, clear color with a smell and taste of cherry. More so than usual I would say. Not as earthy as one would expect.
This is a good wine, but I'm going to move on. There are better bottles out there. However, if you're looking for a good example from the Rioja region for under $15, this might just be it...
4 out of 5 stars for the 2001.
Dry. Very nice. Really enjoyed it.
$15 at a local independent wine shop in Atlanta.
3 out of 5 stars for the 1999.
2 years older, more expensive, but not nearly as good as the 2001.
$18 at a local, independent wine shop in Atlanta.
Thank you for the reviews Angel. I'm noticing a common theme here from our Atlanta visitors. It appears Atlanta has a higher markup on wine.
I also have tried the 2001. And, I agree it is the superior vintage.

Cherry and Blackberry here with a stringent woody aftertaste. Decent stuff though. I wouldn't refuse it, and I'd purchase a bottle or two for a impromptu party.

Another good wine, and I enjoy the label. This syrah is a bit on the sweet side. A real raspberry flavor followed by something I can't quite place. Something less sweet. Licorice comes to mind, but that just isn't it.
Anyway, the aroma and palate comes together nicely. It's just not a great wine. It's just a good, solid bottle of vino.
3 OUT OF 5 STARS
Okay, this is going to sound bad, but really it's not. This wine was nearly flavorless, which one might associate with "bad" or at least "not-so-great." But, no. This is a very palatable wine. I somehow found its lack of flavor as a plus. I feel like this bottle could be served with anything imaginable and still enhance its flavor.
This wine will neither woo nor disgust. It's a safe bet at any gathering, and therefore I give it a 3 STAR rating. I'd go so far as to recommend this wine at any eclectic social event...
Palate? For lack of better description, I taste Earth. Nothing bitter. Smooth as smooth can be.
Geez. Now I feel like I was raving... I wasn't. What I meant to pass on to you was just this: This syrah is Non-offensive.

Here's another average wine. Good. Not great. Inexpensive. Maybe a tad on the sweeter side for a Shiraz.
These bottles seem to be about as readily available as bot Yellow Tail and Alice White and similar in quality. There seems to be several cheap, inexpensive Aussie wines out there at the moment. I enjoy each of them. However, none of them are my favorites... so far.

A little sweet but not overly so. However, I don't usually associate sweet with Pinot Noir, so something is amiss here. Decent wine though. Don't NOT try it.

A good solid Syrah. Not great. My first impression was not good. After a good whiff and a swirl onto my tongue, there was an immediate bitterness I did not appreciate. After a couple more swills, the wine was going down smoother. It certainly mellowed over time. Now, I find it quite palatable.
There are better Syrahs out there for your $7. Try another. I only recommend this particular bottle if you enjoy a very, very strong taste of cherry.

3 OUT OF 5 STARS
Quite smooth until the slightly bitter end -- which is atypical of a Petite Sirah in my opinion. If it wasn't for the bite of bitter left lingering on my tongue, I would've easily given this wine a 4. So, if you don't mind such a bite, this will be a great wine for you at a great price.
Palate? Cherry and blackberry... Good with a simple meal of steak and potatoes. I can see the bitter coming in at the right moment to really spark the flavor of a nice, juicy, medium-raw sirloin.
I also like the label. Simple style and lack of color. Funky.
YEAR: 20063 OUT OF 5 STARS
Again, not too bad. There is almost a hint of licorice here. I'm pretty sure I've never used such to describe the flavor of a wine before. In fact, I rather dislike licorice. But, in this case, it's not bad. I don't really know how that works...
Another smooth wine from Tierra Del Sol. Zero harshness during nor after. This bottle could probably compliment just about anything you stir up in the kitchen... that's red and bloody.
My bottle missed dinner but helped accompany me through a sitting of Goya's Ghosts. Not my favorite film. But not terrible either. Since No Country for Old Men I've been looking forward to viewing another film with Xavier Bardem. He's a fairly convincing actor I'd say...
Is it okay to accompany a Spanish film with Argentinian wine? I'm not sure, but everything seemed to go alright. No complaints.

Not a bad Rioja. Good deep purple in color with great clarity. Palate is a bit sweet for my taste with a slightly bitter aftertaste or "bite." I don't really have anything to complain about here. It just doesn't grab me. There's almost something about it I just don't like. The bitter postlude is also marred by a slight nutty taste.
I don't know. This is an average wine I guess. Feel free to try it. I just think there are a ton better wines out there for your hard-earned bucks.
I enjoy Riojas quite a bit. So, hopefully, you'll see more reviews of them here soon.

A strong flavor of current and cherry here in my opinion. I almost gave this bottle a 4 STAR rating... but didn't. Not a bad bottle. My only issue is that I believe it was a $15 or $16 bottle on sale for $10.
Much better wines are available for half the price. This wine is a good example of why we produce this blog.

There's wood involved in this wine. Certainly an oak flavor. Pretty good stuff. Just not fantastic. I don't even feel like giving it a FOUR. I guess I'd give it a 3.5 since I really feel it's just above average. But "no." THREE stars is what they get.

Maybe 4 really. This one is pretty good, I guess. I find myself usually thinking..."Eh, sure. It's wine." This one is pretty tame, not terribly exciting, but it seems that may be what I like. Smooth and unoffensive. I can dig it.

On revisit of this wine, I'd like to give it a slightly more robust review. This is a very good Syrah. I can't quite give it a 4 STAR rating, but it's close. There are some great earthly tones here, and a very smooth palate of cherry and raspberry. Very nice indeed. Certainly worth your consideration.
And, as Jay pointed out, the label "pops." I do like it. It has a certain simpleness to it and an elegant use of color without going overboard...

Again, another good showing for Red Truck. My only complaint regarding this bottling is its sweetness. I don't mind sweet, but I don't want to still be pondering it two minutes beyond my last swallow. This wine is a bit heavy on the sugar if you know what I mean. I feel the need to brush my teeth twice before hitting the sack. Make sense?
It's a good wine though. Especially if you're in the mood for a leggy/thick, sweet Merlot with a strong taste of plumb. At least that is what I extract from my sampling.

Another very good wine from Red Truck. For lack of a better description, there's a ton of BERRY in this wine. I mean a ton. That said, it's not overwhelmingly sweet. It's quite good. No bitter what-so-ever. No earthly aftertaste. Just berry without being overly sweet or thick like syrup.

A good blend. Merlot and Cabernet blends tend to compliment very well. These varietals tend to be on opposite ends of the grape spectrum for me. Therefore, the combination of both tends to produce a somewhat medium flavor. Merlot will cancel the bitter of Cabernet, while Cabernet tends to tone down the sweetness of Merlot. Overall, I would say this is a good wine. I almost gave it 4 stars...

Very pungent cherry with a dull aftertaste. Not bad, but not as good as previous Fat Bastard offerings in my opinion. Very, very dark purple in color. More like a Cabernet than a Shiraz. Good flavor though. Not too strong. No bitter end. Honestly, I'm surprised by the difference a year can make. While I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this bottle again, I don't highly recommend it either... and I remember really enjoying the previous Fat Bastard Shiraz. Oh, well. What can one do?
